For several decades, health experts have encouraged people to add regular walking programs for a healthy lifestyle.





An early study found that walking not only helped weight loss, but reduced belly fat more than subcutaneous fatty areas.

Over age 60

Studying 60 to 70 year old men and women at the Washington University School of Medicine at St. Louis, Missouri, researchers provided a 9 to 12 month cardiovascular program of walking or jogging about 45 minutes 4 times weekly.

They measured body composition with water or hydrodensitometry, and fatty distribution using skin fold and circumference measurements.

Successful belly fat reduction

By the end of the program, the men had lost more weight than the women, but both groups showed the largest reduction of stomach fat in the abdominal area (Kohrt, Exercise training improves fat distribution patterns in 60- to 70-year old men and women, Journal of Gerontology, July 1992).

Reducing the risk of diabetes

Abdominal adiposity is dangerous fatty tissue and is associated with increased risk of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and heart disease.

But it’s encouraging that even older people can reduce this dangerous abdominal fatty tissue by using a simple walking program to lose weight.
