There have been so many positive findings in this area of research from preliminary cellular and animal studies to human studies.

In one of these studies, researchers at the University of Tennessee placed 32 obese adults on reduced calorie diets for 24 weeks.

One group was placed on a standard diet, receiving 400-500 mg. supplements of dietary calcium daily.

One high calcium group received the diet plus 800 mg. high calcium supplements, and the third high dairy group received a high dairy diet with 1200 to 1300 mg. dietary calcium daily.

Compared to the first standard diet group, the high calcium supplement group lost 26% more weight and 38% more body fat.

High dairy shows best results

The high dairy group with over 1200 mg dairy calcium daily lost 70% more weight and 64% more body fat than the standard group.

Whey protein and belly fat

The standard group lost 19% of their total fatty loss from the abdominal (belly) region, while the high calcium group lost 50% from the abdomen, and the high dairy group lost 66% from the abdominal areas (Zemel, Calcium and dairy acceleration of weight and fat loss during energy restriction in obese adults, Obesity Research, April 2004).

Cellular mechanisms may include enhanced fat utilization by calcitrol, and synergistic enhancement of weight loss by branched chain amino acids from whey protein.
