Blueberry powder obesity research Researchers at the USDA Service in Arkansas have tested animals on highfat diets with dried powdered whole blueberries, strawberry powder, Concord grape or black raspberry powder, and purified anthocyanins. For eight weeks, the mice received either 10% lowfat diets, 45% highfat diets, or 60% highfat diets with the powdered berry supplement variations. Only those that received additional purified anthocyanins on the highfat diet showed reduced body fat (reduced obesity) and normalized blood lipids like cholesterol and triglycerides. Neither the whole berries nor anthocyanins from purple corn were sufficient to reduce the risk of damage from the high fat diet (Prior, Purified berry anthocyanins but not whole berries normalize lipid parameters in mice fed an obesogenic high fat diet, Mol Nutr Food Research, September 2009). Anthocyanins are pigments from some fruits and vegetables with blue, purple, or dark red colors.
