In 2011, Michigan was ranked the 10th most obese state in America, but was ranked the fourth most obese state 15 years ago.

The overall obesity rate in Michigan is now at 30.5% of adults.

  • Combining the rates for overweight and obese adults gives a total of 65.7% of their total population of 9,883,640 (U. S. Census 2010), or about 6 ½ million people with increased risks of life-threatening health conditions.

  • In fact, diabetes has increased since 1996 to 9.5% and 28.7% of the population has hypertension.

  • Racial and ethnic categories show

      41.1% obese rates among Blacks,

      32.9% among Latinos, and

      29.1% among Whites.

Childhood obesity statistics for Michigan

  • Approximately 23.6% of the population is under the age of 18, and as of 2007, 12.4 per cent of those children and teens, age 10 to 17, were considered obese.

  • This means that up to 300,000 young people are at risk of developing serious medical conditions.

  • According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2008, the following Michigan counties had obese levels over 30%: Alger, Antrim, Arenac, Baraga, Barry, Bay, Benzie, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Cheboygan, Chippewa, Clare, Crawford, Delta, Eaton, Emmet, Genesee, Gladwin, Gogebic, Gratiot, Huron, Ionia, Iosco, Isabella, Jackson, Keweenaw, Lake, Lapeer, Leelanau, Lenawee, Luce, Mackinac, Marquette, Mason, Midland, Missaukee, Monroe, Montcalm, Montmorency, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Ogemaw, Ontonagon, Osceola, Oscoda, Roscommon, Saginaw, Sanilac, Schoolcraft, St. Joseph, Wayne, and Wexford County.

  • Saginaw County had the highest rate of obesity at 35.5% and Oakland had the lowest at 25.9%.

  • Diabetes rates were over 10% in Genesee and Wayne counties. Grand Traverse and Livingston tied for the lowest rates of diabetes at 7.7%.

  • Saginaw County is the least active, and Washtenaw County reports the most active people.





State programs and resources for improved nutrition and exercise

  • Michigan is among 26 other states that offer a farm to school program.

  • It is among 16 US states that provide safe street usage for all forms of transportation, including pedestrians and bicyclists.

  • Outdoor recreation areas are available on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Huron (and almost 65,000 other lakes), in National Parks, National Lakeshores, and National forests, as well as the largest state park and state forest system in the United states, city parks, and private recreational facilities.

  • Michigan produces a diversity of fresh agricultural products second only to California, including dairy, meat, poultry and eggs, fresh fruits (blueberries, cherries, grapes, apples, peaches, plums, pears, strawberries) and vegetables and cereals for a healthy diet.

  • Other sources of help to reduce Michigan obesity levels include private physicians, hospital educational support, church support groups, non-profit organizations, community initiatives, public health state task force childhood programs, and community grants from the federal government, in addition to self-education.

Michigan also uses the CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to monitor risk reduction for cardiovascular diseases, obesity, breast and cervical cancers, asthma, and tobacco prevention programs.
